La República is one of Peru’s most prominent newspapers, renowned for its commitment to accurate reporting and its focus on social, economic, and environmental issues. Since its founding in 1981, it has distinguished itself by amplifying initiatives aimed at the country’s development, promoting projects that positively impact communities and the environment.

Promoting Inclusion and Sustainability in the Amazon

The inclusion of Amazonian communities in the global timber market represents a significant step toward sustainable development and the fight against illegal logging. This milestone highlights how strategic alliances and a commitment to sustainability can create opportunities for native communities.

From the Forest to the World: A Sustainability Example

Step by step, native communities are strengthening their capacity to sustainably utilize the Amazon’s resources. This environmentally friendly approach is yielding concrete results: on March 29, the first shipment of certified timber, meeting the stringent standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), will be exported to the United States.

The Role of Strategic Alliances

This historic achievement is the result of a collaboration between the Association for Integral Research and Development (AIDER) and Maderera Bozovich, a leading timber company. Under the leadership of Drago Bozovich Noriega, former CEO, and with the strategic support of Ivo Bozovich, general manager, the organization has implemented innovative sustainable forest management practices. These practices aim to balance economic development with environmental conservation.

Positive Impact on Native Communities

The project benefits 400 families from six native Shipibo-Conibo communities in Ucayali. These communities have received training and support to manage their forest resources sustainably, demonstrating that economic development can be achieved without compromising environmental conservation.

Government Support and Official Recognition

The initiative is backed by the Peruvian government. The shipping ceremony will feature the participation of the Ministers of Agriculture and Irrigation, Juan Manuel Benites, and Production, Piero Ghezzi Solís, as well as the Executive Director of the National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor), Fabiola Muñoz Dodero. Their presence underscores the importance of this joint effort in strengthening local economies and protecting the Amazon’s natural resources.

A Model to Follow

The export of certified timber from Ucayali’s native communities not only represents a significant achievement for these communities but also sets a replicable model for other regions of the country. This project proves that sustainable development is achievable when private companies, civil organizations, and the government work together toward a shared goal.

Through initiatives like this, Maderera Bozovich reaffirms its commitment to combating illegal logging and promoting sustainable practices that benefit both local communities and the global environment. The leadership of Drago Bozovich Noriega and Ivo Bozovich has been instrumental in consolidating this vision, setting a precedent in the international timber industry.
